One of the best things about running Vicky B. Online is that I get to meet with some of the best and talented individuals in the business.
Earlier in March I attended World MasterCard Fashion Week and got the opportunity to interview the talent behind the luxurious brand PAVONI.
Based out of Montreal, PAVONI was co-founded in 2010 by Gianni Falcone & Mike Derderian. Their label caters to women that want to feel and look luxurious at ready to wear prices. Their dresses bring out glamour, sophistication, uniqueness and elegance.
The luxury brand has quickly generated international exposure and their dresses have been worn by some of the hottest women in Hollywood including, Katy Perry, Fergie, Carrie Underwood, Shakira, Lindsay Lohan, Miranda Lambert and most recently TV personality Erin Andrews at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
PAVONI will be at the Holt Renfrew Bloor store in Toronto to preview their FW 12/13 collection on Wednesday (May 2) 11AM-4PM.

Vicky B. Online: How important was it for PAVONI to be part of Toronto Fashion Week?
PAVONI: It was very important for us to be part of Toronto Fashion Week, first of all because we are both Canadian and it’s great to be on home ground where we can have the support and love of our closest friends and family members… but also to assert our visibility as a fashion brand, not only in the Canadian market but also the North American and international market in general. Toronto Fashion week allowed us to present ourselves on a great platform that provided us with incredible media visibility on both the North American and International level, in an unparalleled opportunity in our constant strive towards building our brand awareness and recognition.
Vicky B. Online: What were some of your inspirations for the Fall collection?
PAVONI: The PAVONI Fall / Winter 2012 collection takes red carpet dressing to the extreme, and expresses the picturesque and artistic beauty of the Crusade movement during the 11th to the 13th century period, by the use of strong details alongside more delicate floral motifs used with intricate, yet elaborate fabrics like chiffon silks, delicate lace or even through dramatic necklace inspired beading on dresses. These combinations of details, silhouettes and styles, lend to this collection an incomparable feeling of luxury. It is through the novel arrangement of hand made drapes and cascading fabric, all the way through the uncontested virtuoso of the ball gowns where the collection is sure to create effects of dazzling freshness. The styles come to live as if by magic gowned in luscious colors of Oxblood red, Rosewood, Rose Gold and the elegant and timeless combination of Black and Nude. All this highlighted by the beautiful embroideries created by the studio that become masterpieces, softening the structure of the collection’s dresses through their discreet brilliance, beautiful designs and unassuming glamour.
Vicky B. Online: How do you get inspired from season to season?
PAVONI: The female body and its curves are the main building block and most important part of the development process for all our silhouette designs and styling season after season. The source of our inspiration and the creative research for the details and cuts found in the dresses comes from our everyday life and surrounding environment… They imprint mostly in my mind over a period of time as a mix of ideas that I am bombarded with either at the start of a collection research or during our work on a previous collection, from nature and the outdoors, to architecture and even through art. These ideas all turn into sketches, illustrations and designs on paper when the moment is just right, and when the next collection’s theme and direction becomes clear.
Vicky B. Online: Which piece took the longest to create?
PAVONI: The longest piece to create in the collection was the Long red geometric rose crystal beaded dress with Silk organza petal detailing at the bottom skirt. This dress took the equivalent of 2500 man working hours of hand labor. If the task were to be completed by a single individual this would been the time necessary for its completion, however during fashion week preparations, and given the quick turn around time necessary for the production of the samples… it took our embroidery atelier, with a team of over 45 workers, a 5 day (11 hours/day) non stop period, to complete this dress.
Vicky B. Online: Everyone from Carrie Underwood, Fergie to Shakira have worn your designs. Which leading lady would you love to see the most wearing one of your dresses?
PAVONI: I think that I would have to say Angelina Jolie, because she embodies our true ideal in a woman… sexy, elegant, sophisticated, and intelligent are some of the things that make her stand out from the croud. However my true appreciation for her comes from her involvement and commitment towards several charities and good will causes around the world.
Vicky B. Online: When I met you both backstage after your show, you told me that Essie was inspired and named a nail polish colour influenced by one of the colours on one of your gowns, tell me about that?
PAVONI: One of the colors we featured in the collection was a beautiful rose gold. As the expression goes “Perfection is in the details,” so a lot of work went into developping the quintessential shade reminiscent of the polished rose gold found in jewellery. Once it was achieved, the silk chiffon, tulle and even crystal beading was dyed to match to create an overall seemless effect. We wanted to carry on that tone for the models nail polish, and Essie who was one of our sponsors told us that they had the exact color we desired but it was set to be launched in june of 2012, despite that, after seing the collection they were so impressed that they decided the PAVONI show would be a perfect oportunity to showcase their new color, and so the shade made it’s debut during our show. It was a fortunate stroke of serendipity.
